BreakTanks Ensure Fire Safety, Access

VANCOUVER, WA -- NWPX Park, a designer of water utilities and environmental solutions, is highlighting its BreakTank water storage tanks, a family of non-pressurized, atmospheric storage solutions for secure water storage in domestic water and fire protection systems.

Commonly used where water resources, supply, or pressure are limited, these tanks rely on gravity for flow and can be installed upstream of domestic or fire pumps to provide spare storage and backflow protection.

NWPX manufactures three main types of BreakTank water storage tanks for domestic and fire applications including, welded steel tanks, corrugated steel tanks, and precast concrete tanks.

Welded storage tanks are above-ground units structurally engineered and built to ASTM A36 standards in sizes from 100 to 40,000 gallons.

Corrugated storage tanks use corrugated galvanized steel to create a lightweight storage solution that ships easily for on-site assembly with sizes from 800 to 440,000 gallons.

Precast concrete storage tanks are structurally engineered for strength and durability in direct-bury applications. They are manufactured in sizes from 500 to 50,000 gallons with optional interior linings available. Underground tanks are a space-saving solution that provides additional security and protection from the elements.

The tanks are resistant to wind, snow, and seismic activity. NFPA 22 compliant tanks support buildings with a substantial risk of fire, such as industrial facilities and high-rise buildings. Typical applications include potable water storage, fire protection water storage, building or green roof irrigation, wastewater storage, and rainwater harvesting.

Each BreakTank is designed as a complete system with key components and accessories included. Tanks are equipped with high- and low-water sensor and alarm systems that monitor and control tank levels.

Mechanical float-operated or electronic solenoid-actuated fill valves control the inflow of water when connected to a potable water pressure source. A control panel with alarms alerts operators when the water level is too high or too low, while a sight gauge allows easy visual inspection of the water level.
Tanks include an overflow pipe that allows excess water to escape into a floor drain if the water level rises too high, and drain ports located at the tank bottom for maintenance and cleaning.

For safe access and long-term durability, BreakTank systems incorporate top and side manways, interior and exterior ladders, and key accessories such as access hatches, overflow drains, and automatic control systems.

Interior liners, available in HDPE, PVC, or epoxy, are applied to protect the tank interior from corrosion or contamination, and long-lasting exterior liners are standard for corrosion protection. Stilling wells and anti-vortex plates help stabilize water conditions inside the tank and support efficient pump operation.
